Capture the perfect profile picture!

The competition is out there for online dating and matchmaking! Some estimates say there are over 40 million men and women who are participating in finding a mate or date online. That means one very important thing—your profile PHOTO is your most critical factor for a great first impression and it has to be a good photo! You are 6 times more likely to be noticed if you have a good photo! This stands to reason as most people are visually oriented. This applies whether you are at the grocery store, walking on the street, or at a party. No matter the location, if you are single, you are paying attention to what someone looks like first and foremost! So, it makes sense when viewing online pictures of available men and women, your photo will either make it or break it when a “potential” mate/date is out there looking.

Initially, forget about anyone looking beyond your photo to see your wonderful qualities and traits if: that picture is blurry, does not enhance your features, you had a bad hair day, you are not wearing appropriate clothing or make-up (ladies), etc... These are just some of the many ways to insure you won’t get noticed! Pay very close attention to the guidelines that are listed below in order to capitalize on someone looking further at you because you had an incredible photo!

Also, make note that attractiveness is a relative term depending upon an individual’s preferences. This means that there is someone out there for everyone and that anyone can look attractive providing they attend to their appearance. It is true that what you are attracted to is not necessarily what another person is attracted to. For women, being different, unique, and distinctive has its advantages. (The Huffington Post, Britney Fitzgerald).

Most people who use online dating and matchmaking companies rely on the photo to initially determine a quick assessment of whether they will spend the time and effort to move forward. With a good photo, they will take the extra step of reading more about you, contacting you to meet, and then actually showing up to see you in person.

Just having a photo is better than not having one at all, but it is equally important that the photo(s) that you choose to post should follow a specific criteria. It is critical to remember that your profile photo is VERY important and should follow these guidelines:

  • ALL photos must be recent — within the last 6 months or less.
  • Photos made professionally are sometimes highly recommended, but the photographer does not have to be the most expensive to be good. Some people use mall photography studios or know someone who is great with a camera.
  • Make sure to have many photos taken in order to have a good selection to choose from.
  • Take advantage of natural light (slightly overcast is best) and outdoor photos when possible.
  • Photos should be previewed by someone who is familiar with the quality of good photos such as a professional photographer to assist in determining the best shots for your profile.
  • Smiling is not over-rated! Everyone looks better when they smile! Although make sure your teeth are in good shape!
  • Avoid over or under dressing either in quantity or quality. Too revealing or covering up too much is unappealing.
  • Wear clothing that is a solid color and one that is the best color especially near your face. Everyone should avoid a white shirt.
  • ALL WOMEN — you MUST wear make-up that is appropriate and not over done (subtle and effective)! When you wear make-up, it is still YOU and it will enhance your best features. If you don’t know how to apply it, find a professional who does.
  • Avoid wearing heavy, bulky jewelry on your neck or ears.
  • Avoid having other people in the photo with you as it can be distracting and confusing as the person viewing it will wonder who these other people are with you.
  • Avoid cropping out other people in photos unless you can make it look like there are no one else’s arms, legs or pieces of them in the photo.
  • Post photos where your face is completely facing the camera. In some photos, a side view is fine, but only in one or two of the five or more that are posted.
  • Avoid photos that you are wearing any kind of mask or other item that covers your face.
  • Post at least one full body shot or close to it—can be from the knees up, sitting down or other similar poses are perfectly acceptable.
  • Photos must not be grainy, blurry, or otherwise distorted.
  • Avoid showing obvious alcoholic drinks or bottles with you in the photo.
  • Avoid posting photos that are taken from a distance perspective — must be able to see you clearly and in view.
  • Avoid posting those that have distracting backgrounds like poles or objects “sticking out” from your body.
  • Post at least five photos of yourself with a combination of head shots, body shots, and those that show your interests or personality.
  • Your primary photo that potentials will see first is one that should be a head shot; full face-forward, and very clear. It should also be the BEST and most flattering of your face.
