A few years ago I was asked to comment on the results of a Pantene survey looking at men’s feelings about women’s hair. There were amazing conclusions such as 74% of men indicated that they notice women because of their hair and 44% of men surveyed said that hair is the first thing they notice about a woman, more than her clothes (26%), legs (25%), or make-up (4%).
For the women of the world who never put that much thought into what men think about their hair, many were surprised by the fact that most men surveyed would be more likely to approach a woman at a bar with great hair than a woman wearing a low-cut shirt. The insights were even more revealing than I had previously thought. 82% of the men surveyed indicated that sexy hair is a key element to a woman’s overall sex appeal.
Dr. Jeff Salz cultural anthropologist and author of “The Evolution of Male Grooming: From Cleanliness to Godliness” says,
Men's preference for healthy hair is due to the fact that long, shimmering hair requires substantial commitment of money, time, and daily care. Such factors would indicate that a woman has good financial status, self-respect, and concern for her personal wellbeing. Men find a woman with long, healthy hair more attractive because these characteristics are what they are looking for in a partner.
But let’s talk about a man’s head of hair for a second. Gone are the days when “bed head” seemed like a good idea. Women are just as discriminate about a man’s haircut as men are about a woman’s. Guys who are clean cut are generally seen as more professional, responsible and safe. It also conveys intelligence and pride. Men who have messy or long, tangled hair seem reckless, restless and uncertain.
Don’t understand the importance of cleanliness, healthiness and grooming. A well groomed head of hair may be the difference maker in determining if someone feels chemistry with you or not. Don’t underestimate it.
